Since ancient times Egypt has had a large class structure including Pharaohs, government officials, soldiers, merchants, and many other classes. Even now there are still large divisions among classes like the social elite and rural poor. But since industrialization new classes have erupted.

The poverty rates in Egypt have gone up and down over the years. Right now Assiut is the poorest governorate in Egypt with a poverty rate of 60%. Right now 26.3% is below the poverty line which has increased over the years.
